Description

The Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association (AOMA) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. The AOMA designates this program for a maximum of 37.0 hours of AOA Category 1-A CME credits and will report CME credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.

The Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. AOMA designates this live activity for a maximum of 37.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Application will be filed for AAFP Prescribed Credits. Determination of credits is pending.

AOMA Annual Convention Cancellation Policy: All requests for refunds must be in writing and received by March 10, 2021. A $50 processing fee will be deducted from the registration fee. Refunds will not be available after March 10, 2021. A credit for a future CME event may be issued.

WILLIAM G. ANDERSON, DO, former President of the American Osteopathic Association, is a founding member of the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine's Board of Directors. Dr. Anderson is a leader in the profession and has held leadership positions including the President of the American Osteopathic Foundation, President of the Michigan Osteopathic Association, President of the Wayne County Osteopathic Medical Association and is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Osteopathic Association and has served on AOA President’s Advisory Council for many years. Dr. Anderson is a Professor of Surgical Services and Senior Advisor to the Dean of Michigan State College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Anderson serves as a role model for all osteopathic students in serving not only their patients but also their community at large. Dr. Anderson began his professional career in the practice of medicine and surgery in Albany, Georgia where he practiced as a family physician for six years. During this time, Dr. Anderson was the founder and first president of the Albany Civil Rights Movement, which spearheaded the Movement in Southwest Georgia. As a leader in the Albany Movement and a community leader, he worked closely with other leaders including Dr. Martin Luther King, Rev. Ralph David Abernathy and Mrs. Rosa Parks, to advance not only the health but also the general well-being of all the residents of his Albany community.

After completing pre-med education at Fort Valley State College, Dr. Anderson enlisted in the United States Navy. Dr. Anderson attended Hospital Corpsmen’s School on the Island of Samar in the Leyte Gulf, and became a fully qualified hospital corpsman and was assigned duties in a naval clinic and hospital. Dr. Anderson completed his training in General Surgery in Detroit Michigan where he conducted a successful group surgical practice until 1984. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree from the Des Moines University/College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is certified in General Surgery and a Fellow in the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons.

Dr. Anderson was married to the late Norma Dixon of Atlanta, also a civil rights leader. Dr. Anderson and Norma published "Autobiographies of a Black Couple of the Greatest Generation," published in 2004, and whose proceeds go to fund the American Osteopathic Foundation's Minority Scholarships.

Dr. Anderson is the proud father of five children, three of whom have followed him into careers in Osteopathic Medicine. He has a daughter who is a Librarian and a second daughter who is Project Training Leader of Professional Development for the State of Georgia, and is a professor at Kennesaw State University. Four grandchildren are in the medical field as well. Dr. Anderson is also the proud great-grandfather of three.

Dr. Anderson has received 12 Honorary Degrees and he lectures at many colleges and universities on matters related to the practice of Osteopathic Medicine and Civil Rights. Michigan State University presents annually, the Slavery to Freedom Lecture Series, which has been named, for Dr. Anderson. This year the series celebrates its 21st year.

Dr. Andrew Chung is a dual-fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon. He earned his osteopathic Degree at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his orthopedic internship at the University of Arizona – Phoenix. He then completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. This was followed by a combined neurosurgical and orthopedic spine fellowship at the University of Southern California. He then went on to pursue an advanced fellowship in outpatient and minimally invasive spine surgical techniques at Cedars Sinai Medical Center and DOCs Hospital.

Dr. Chung has co-authored over 60 peer-reviewed articles in major spine and orthopedic journals and has written numerous book chapters on spine surgical care. His research has been presented both nationally and internationally. He additionally serves as a reviewer for several major spine journals and remains an active member of the Society of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery and the North American Spine Society. Finally, he continues to serve as a lecturer at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona – Orthopedic Residency.

 As a pediatric and internal medicine trained clinician educator with a passion to empower families and optimize well-being, Dr. Tala Dajani enjoys for caring for children at Mission Children’s Hospital in Asheville, NC.  She was a clinical educator at ATSU-SOMA from 2017-2021. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston in 1998, pediatric endocrinology fellowship training from Phoenix Children’s Hospital in 2005 and Master’s in Public Health from the University of Arizona in 2005. She cared for children as an endocrinology faculty member at Phoenix Children’s Hospital (PCH) from 2005 to 2010. At PCH, she served as the founding medical director of the diabetes center and lipid clinic, leading the program to the first national accreditation and center of excellence status. Dr Dajani operated and cared for patients at Pediatric Endocrinology of Phoenix from 2010 to 2017 during which time she furthered her expertise and experience in the endocrine care of the survivor of childhood cancer, special needs population, transgender and those living with cystic fibrosis. In 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015, her peers voted Dr. Dajani as a National Top Doctor. At SOMA, Dr. Dajani participates in the planning and implementation of the Osteopathic Wellness Lifestyle and Culinary Experiential Curriculum. She cares for children at Children’s Rehabilitative Services endocrine clinic weekly (2005-present). Dr Dajani enjoys playing viola, teaching yoga, exploring nature and practicing mindfulness.

Dr. David Engelthaler is an Associate Professor and the Director of TGen North, the infectious disease arm of the non-profit Translational Genomics Research Institute. He currently oversees the TGen North Clinical Laboratory, that was stood up in March 2020 to specifically provide COVID-19 testing and has provided tests for over 56,000 Arizonans and has sequenced over 6,000 strains of SARS-CoV-2. Dr. Engelthaler also oversees a number of research groups working on the development of analytical tools to detect and characterize infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, valley fever, MRSA, and others.

His team at TGen also provides genomic services to CDC and local health departments. He has published 135 scientific papers and chapters on epidemiology, disease ecology, genetics, and microbiology and he has two dozen patented inventions, including assays that received either FDA EUA or 510k clearance.

He received his Masters in Microbiology from Colorado State University and his PhD in Biology at Northern Arizona University. He was previously the Arizona State Epidemiologist and a biologist for the CDC.

Dave has worked in federal, state and local government, and has started for-profit and non-profit businesses. Dave sits on a number of local and national Boards and recently he led the establishment of Flagstaff, AZ as “America’s First STEM City”.

Dr. Bob is a Public Health doc who has held several State and Local positions over the years, including State Epidemiologist for Arizona and 12 years as the Director for the Maricopa County Department of Public Health. Karen J. Nichols, DO, MA, MACOI, CS is most recently the Dean of the Midwestern University/Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine serving since 2002 until stepping down July 2018. She took a leave to serve as President of the American Osteopathic Association 2010-2011. Prior to serving as Dean, she was Assistant Dean, Post-Doctoral Education and Division Director (chair), Internal Medicine at the Midwestern University/Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine since 1997. She was in the private practice of internal medicine and geriatrics in Mesa, Arizona from 1985 through 2002. A graduate of the Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCU-COM) with a DO degree, she holds a Master’s degree in Management with a specialty in Healthcare Administration from Central Michigan University. In 2015, she was selected for the highest honor given by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), the Distinguished Service Award as well as receiving a Presidential Citation in 2018. In 2015, she received the Robert A. Kistner, DO Award and then in 2020, received the Dale Dodson, DO Award, the two highest honors bestowed by the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine. She has received numerous other awards.

She has served as President of the American Osteopathic Association, President of the Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association and President of the American College of Osteopathic Internists and was the first woman to hold all those positions. She is Past President of the Institute of Medicine of Chicago Board of Governors. Dr. Nichols is one of the two first DOs nominated by the AOA and elected to the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education board. She is the Chair of that board and serves on the Executive Committee and Policy Committee.

Dr. Nichols has served on the boards of the Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Osteopathic International Alliance and the American Osteopathic Foundation.  By invitation she frequently speaks nationally on leadership, end-of-life care and outreach issues for osteopathic medicine. She is also authoring a book on Leadership for Physicians.

In 2004 Dr. Nichols created the endowed Costin Institute for Osteopathic Medical Educators, sited at Midwestern University/Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, a one-year hybrid fellowship which has graduated over 300 medical educators. Dr. Nichols teaches nationally and internationally on the topics of end-of-life care, physician leadership, and women leaders in medicine.

In 2018, she obtained her post-masters family nurse practitioner (FNP) certificate from Grand Canyon University. As an FNP, she has had experience in both adult and pediatric primary care settings. Melissa’s most recent endeavor includes her current position as a Community Medical Liaison in the respiratory therapeutic area as well as adjunct faculty at Grand Canyon University’s College of Nursing. She is passionate about ongoing health care quality improvement, both as an individual and organization, collaborative practice between all facets of healthcare, empowering providers and patients with knowledge to enable patients to serve as their own health care advocate, and challenging students in the academic environment. Personally, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Mike, a pharmacist, and their three children. Most weekends you can find her on the sidelines of a basketball court cheering on her sons, hiking, or having an impromptu kitchen dance party. 

Melissa is ecstatic to have the opportunity to collaborate with Dr. Dajani on a very passionate topic, diabetes. She has volunteered for years at the local ADA chapter’s diabetes camp, Camp AZDA, as both a diabetic counselor and medical staff. Melissa has lived with type 1 diabetes for almost 36 years. She has the unique lens of both a patient and a provider. Melissa hopes that in sharing her perspective she will help dissolve barriers for both patients and providers alike.
